Ron Whitten recently wrote that "most of the best new golf courses in the USA will be built on top of old ones" and we couldn't agree more. The best land adjacent densely populated urban centers has already been claimed for golf. While achieving the developer's initial goals of maximizing real estate values these courses tend to fall flat when it comes to playability and strategy. These courses have also suffered from the transformative effects of time rendering many of the original design features ineffective and turf conditions less than ideal.
At APDC, we are particularly skilled at reinventing the golf experience by focusing on the things that matter. Our overriding goal for any remodel project is to position it for long term success. For a club to compete for new members there must be a noticeable difference in the appearance of the course after the remodel. Variety and strategic interest are also paramount in keeping golfers interested in playing as much as possible. As students of golf course architecture, we savor the opportunity study the aspects that make each course an original work of art. From time to time we have the distinct privilege of curating the work of another architect. From a national treasure like Pebble Beach Golf Links to storied clubs like Oakmont and Cherry Hills, APDC has faithfully restored the swagger to a number of classic courses.
A successful restoration begins with a deep understanding of the history of the course and its original architect. Through careful study of previous drawings, plans and photographs paired with insight from the club's membership, to highlight the proposed scope of work. Once the master plan is approved, construction begins and the architects at APDC are on the ground to insure a successful project.
